The TMJs (temporomandibular joints) are the joints used to connect the jawbone to the skull. They are located on both sides of the head, in front of the ears, and are the most complex joints in the body. They are surrounded by muscles and ligaments, which help them to function. However, there are times when there may be an issue surrounding the joints during which a dentist in the Wichita area may diagnose patients with a condition called TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder).
TMD is a condition that may be caused by a variety of factors. Causes and symptoms of TMD may include:
The dentist of East Wichita Dentist is well versed in assisting patients who have been diagnosed with TMD. If they have not yet received a proper diagnosis, our team can help. Complete dental and medical evaluations are necessary to establish a diagnosis of TMD and then assist patients in treating it. This evaluation may include x-rays or scans to check the soft tissues, joints, and muscles around the jaw.
Once TMD has been diagnosed, patients can work with their dental team to find relief. In many cases, oral appliance therapy is a highly desirable method of addressing the problems associated with the TMJ. Oral appliance therapy requires patients to wear a special mouth guard at night (and sometimes during the day) to align the jaw and relieve pressure on the TMJ. This can result in reduced headaches, protection of the natural teeth from damage, and a better quality of life. Many patients who are diagnosed with TMD do not want to live life on pharmaceuticals to deal with their condition, so we offer a solution free from medication to allow our patients to get on with their lives and put the condition behind them.
