TMD diagnosis and treatment by Wichita area Dentist

At East Wichita Dentist, we provide a wide range of services and procedures for patients in and around the Wichita area. When patients come to our practice concerned about pain and stress in the jaw area, we work hard to diagnose the condition to provide effective relief. In many cases, patients may be dealing with a condition called TMD.

TMD, also known as temporomandibular joint disorder, is a problem with the jaw joint. It can also affect the muscles around the joint and can cause problems in surrounding areas. The joint, called the TMJ (temporomandibular joint), may become painful. While this is the joint necessary for opening and closing the mouth, it can become problematic due to dislocation, bruxism (clenching and grinding of the teeth), arthritis, or stress.

Diagnosis starts with examinations and x-rays of the jaw by the team of East Wichita Dentist. Common symptoms and signs associated with TMD include difficulty eating, popping and clicking while yawning or eating, pain and discomfort in the jaw area that may radiate down to the neck and shoulders, inability to open the mouth wide, the jaw becoming stuck open or closed, and swelling around the jaw. Other considerations include chronic headaches and neck aches, dizziness, and even ringing in the ears. Diagnosis can be done to help rule out other conditions including sinusitis, toothaches, gum disease, and arthritis, which may mimic similar problems.

Treatment for TMD varies depending on the needs of the patient and the severity of the condition. In most cases, TMD can be handled by a dentist with oral appliance therapy. Oral appliances can be worn to help realign the jaw and reduce the pressure of clenching and grinding that may occur in those struggling with the condition. In severe cases, treatment may include surgery, but this is a last resort.

Patients in the Wichita area who are interested in learning more about TMD and getting proper diagnosis and treatment are welcome to contact East Wichita Dentist to schedule an initial examination to determine if this is the problem. Once the condition has been recognized, patients can work with their dentist to develop an effective treatment plan for relief.

Such an amazing dental office! The staff is so nice and welcoming. I felt right at home. They used sedation dentistry on me and it took all the fear from me and it didn't even hurt. I have never met a dental office that is so easy to talk to! Love them
