Wichita KS Dentist suggests methods to keep kids teeth clean and healthy

Teaching children how to take care of their oral health begins in the home. Parents of young children should ensure that their child has a good understanding of how to maintain good dental habits. At East Wichita Dentist, we consult with parents in regards to ways to maintain good oral health habits from the start. Even for babies, parents can take proper steps to care for their child’s teeth and gums.

Below are some tips to ensure kids can enjoy a healthy, happy mouth between visits with their Wichita, KS dentist:

Start Early
It is important that parents help their infant start strong with good oral health habits. Even before the child develops his or her baby teeth, it is important to use a soft, wet cloth to wipe the gums gently after every feeding.

Avoid Bedtime Bottles
Children should never go to bed with a bottle or sippy cup of milk or juice. If a child takes a drink to bed, it should be water. Any other drink can cause tooth decay.

Proper Toothbrush
Parents should make sure that they are using the right toothbrush for their child. For babies, use a soft bristled toothbrush that is appropriate for an infant. When the child begins to brush his or her own teeth, parents should upgrade to a children’s toothbrush that fits little hands.

Floss
Flossing is often overlooked, but is very important for little ones. As soon as a child develops two teeth, flossing can begin.

Fluoride Toothpaste
Fluoride toothpaste is suggested for children who are able to spit toothpaste and avoid swallowing. This usually occurs around two years of age. Fluoride is great for protecting the teeth.

In addition to home care routines, children should visit their dentist twice a year. In the early years, these visits will be relatively simple, and may include an introduction to the staff and equipment, a quick visual examination of the mouth, and perhaps a fluoride treatment. Taking the child to the dentist as soon as he or she receives the first tooth is recommended by the American Dental Association, and is supported by the staff at East Wichita Dentist.

Such an amazing dental office! The staff is so nice and welcoming. I felt right at home. They used sedation dentistry on me and it took all the fear from me and it didn't even hurt. I have never met a dental office that is so easy to talk to! Love them
